About the Artwork +
This spectacular and highly decorative Kalighat painting by Sonali Chitrakar presents a beautiful, narrative moment from Vrindavan, involving Radha, Lord Krishna and his sacred cows. Characterized by its monumental focal figures and bold contours, the composition masterfully handles traditional sacred iconography through a vibrant folk lens.
Kalighat painting is a traditional art form that originated in the 19th century around the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, Bengal, practiced by the Patua community. It is celebrated for its sweeping, lyrical brushstrokes, bold color fills, and a unique blend of mythological themes with satirical commentary on contemporary life. Traditionally executed with water-based pigments on paper, this style is renowned for its rapid, expressive line-work and minimalistic backgrounds that emphasize the volume and dramatic expressions of the central figures.
Standing dynamically at the center of the frame is the deep cerulean-blue skinned Lord Krishna, balanced on his left leg in his iconic cross-legged tribhanga pose. He holds a golden-brown flute (bansuri) horizontally to his lips, his face detailed with elongated white-rimmed eyes, a sharp nose, and a soft smile. He is adorned with a towering golden crown topped by a large, multi-colored peacock feather and wrapped in an elaborate yellow dhoti (pitambar) featuring fine red trim and white polka dots. Standing to his left is a beautifully garbed Radha, rendered in a warm ochre skin tone, wearing a terracotta-orange sari patterned with fine white rosettes, her hand raised in a gesture of adoration.
To the right of Krishna, a tight cluster of three stylized humped cows crane their heads upward toward the deity, their cream-colored hides textured with soft brown shading along their necks and horns. The entire scene unfolds beneath the winding, dark brown branches of a sacred Kadamba tree that fills the upper register, its dense green canopy dotted with perfectly circular blue blossoms outlined in black. Grounding the figures at the base is a series of rolling, terracotta-colored earth mounds textured with fine vertical lines, sitting atop a stylized blue river register. The entire painting is enclosed within a beautiful, continuous wavy green vine border punctuated by white floral stars.
This composition beautifully captures the devotional warmth of pastoral Bengal through a highly rhythmic arrangement of forms. By surrounding the central figure of Krishna with the adoring gazes of both human and animal subjects, Sonali Chitrakar masterfully uses the sweeping lines of the Patua tradition to celebrate the universal, magnetic harmony of divine love.
