This pair of semicircular woven panels by Urmila Devi presents a dynamic, modern rendition of Uttar Pradesh’s traditional Moonj grass craft. Departing from classic full-circle designs, the artwork utilizes a split-mandala composition to showcase organic rhythm, earthy texture and understated geometric elegance.
Rooted in the rural crafting traditions along the riverbanks of Uttar Pradesh, Moonj craft transforms wild perennial grasses into sustainable, eco-friendly art. The process relies on Kaans (Kasa) grass to form a durable core framework, around which harvested Moonj grass is sun-dried and tightly coiled.
In this piece, the natural, un-dyed tonal variations of the grass is highlighted through the selection of deeper and lighter stalks to build visual contrast without synthetic dyes. The artwork is structured into two mirrored half-moon forms, each featuring an expanding radial arch design.
A solid semicircle at the center of each panel anchors the composition with dense, tightly wound rings. A prominent middle tier features vertically aligned, fan-like grass stitches that evoke the radiating rays of a rising sun. Multiple broad outer bands of horizontal coiling sweep outward, extending the energy of the motif across the full span
Both semicircular pieces are reinforced with a clean, tightly bound border along both the flat base and the sweeping outer curve. This crisp edge gives each panel a sharp geometric silhouette, allowing the two pieces to be displayed together as a divided circle or arranged separately as dynamic archways.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
