About the Artwork +
These Pichwai paintings by Naveen Soni offer a breathtaking, comprehensive narrative of traditional Pichwai art reimagined for modern interiors. Spanning across three cohesive panels, the collection functions as a singular visual story that explores symmetry, spatial inversion and sacred iconography.
Pichwai is a traditional cloth-based scroll painting from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, primarily created to adorn the sanctuary of Shrinathji (a seven-year-old child manifestation of Krishna) and is known for its intricate detailing and rich, vivid colors.
The central frame features an illustrative scene, serving as the narrative heart of the comprehensive composition. Two stylized, traditionally shaded sacred cows face inward toward one another. The cow on the left is bathed in a warm ochre hue, intricately decorated with a pearl head ornament and a layered necklace with a hanging bell. The cow on the right is a soft white, turning its head back with an alert, gentle expression while wearing a layered necklace with a hanging bell and yellow mukut.
In keeping with the sacred traditions of the Gopashtami festival, both cows are stamped with small, distinct saffron handprints across their bodies, symbolizing the loving blessings and protection of Lord Krishna. Their lower legs and hooves also feature a matching orange hue.
The backdrop is a flat cream color, allowing the symbolic background patterns to function as a sacred texture. At the centre in the background is a large deep maroon bindi. Around this are numerous small yellow handprints, each embedded with its own maroon bindi. This gesture represents the Abhaya Mudra, an emblem of fearlessness and divine protection.
The left frame features a solid yellow handprint set against a patterned pale blue background. The handprint is centered and clean, sharply silhouetted to draw the eye immediately. The visual dynamic is completely inverted in the right frame. Here, the background is rendered in a solid coat of the same yellow, while the central handprint is a patterned pale blue.
At the core of both frames are two deeply sacred motifs loaded with spiritual resonance in Krishna devotion. The dominant shape in both is an elongated, stylized human handprint featuring a large, deep maroon bindu resting at the base of the palm. The open palm is a symbol of divine protection and reassurance (Abhaya Mudra - the mudra of fearlessness), while the bindu represents the concentrated focus of divine energy and auspiciousness. The patterned segments of both frames are densely filled with a repeating motif of Pichwai cows, similar to the ones in the central frame.
The triptych is unified by simple wooden frames that seamlessly tie the three distinct pieces into a single, cohesive art installation. Moving away from traditional ornamental borders and focusing strictly on form, inversion and texture, while integrating traditional motifs, delivers a magnificent contemporary masterpiece that beautifully bridges timeless Rajasthani heritage with modern minimalism.
