About the Artwork +

This unique Tholu Bommalata lamp by Sindhe Siva features a composition of tendrils and stylised leaves along with dragonflies in the hues of a pink and purple palette.

Tholu Bommalata is originally a performative art style, where ‘tholu’ refers to leather, ‘bommalu’ refers to puppets, and ‘aata’ refers to play. This performative art is used for leather puppetry, which is popular in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. Over time, this performative art also took its place in painting and decorative art.

This short, trapezium-shaped lamp is painted with clusters of leaves and foliage, coloured in hues of pink and purple, along with green, evoking a sense of warmth and refreshment in the room. Outlined with delicate contours, with veins drawn freely, a spontaneous art is achieved in a stylised manner. Alongside, the dragonflies are rendered with naturalism. Their rendition is attained with grace and serenity, and a revival of their existence can be felt in the urban spaces.

The surface fabric of the lampshade is perforated with sequences of holes, illuminating the space with light and life. Painted in the traditional art style of Tholu Bommalata and used as a functional and decorative art in daily life, this composition exemplifies the cultural heritage of India
