About the Artwork +
This is a beautiful Pichwai painting by artist Naveen Soni portrays Shrinathji, in his most prominent and renowned form, with his beloved companions, the cows, rendered using pure silver leafing and pigments on cotton.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile art tradition from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, created to be hung behind the murti of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple. Traditionally rendered in natural pigments, gold and silver leaf on cloth, Pichwai paintings depict the deity across the seasons and festivals of the Pushtimarg devotional calendar, combining fine detail with a scale meant to fill and frame the sanctum itself.
At the centre of the composition is a monumental sized render of Sreenathji in his iconic Govardhandhari pose, with his left hand raised gracefully, in his yellowish-orange garments. He is heavily ornamented in pearl and gemstone necklaces accompanied by a floral garland, gold and gemstone arm ornaments and earrings, nath (nosering) and a stylised headdress from which his braided hair emerges. The diamonds on his nose and chin add to his beauty. He holds his flute in his right hand, with his dark blue skin contrasting with the pink lotus pedestal he stands upon.
At his feet are two cows, with orange handprints on their body, orange feet and heads as he stands on a lotus bloom. Above him is a personified version of the sun, as the Sun God, and two winged Gandharvas (demi-gods), dressed in pink and orange garments and adorned with elaborate jewellery and head pieces, as they witness this divinity. Their presence signifies reverence, joy, and the celebration of divine occasions.
Surrounding this frame are multiple cows, mirroring each other. These cows are adorned with necklaces and have orange handprints on them, signifying the divine protection and connection to Krishna. The orange feet and heads of the cows reflect the festive temple traditions of Nathdwara, where the cows were adorned during daily rituals and celebrations.
The entire composition is placed on a pastel pink background with a starry night dissolving into floral showers for Sreenathji and dotted floral patterns for the cows. Assembling this composition are the layered borders with two thin strips of silver encasing a pastel pink border with brown and white flowers along with their stems and leaves followed by another terracotta-red border.
