About the Artwork +
This monumental Pichwai painting by Naveen Soni portrays Shrinathji standing in divine poise amidst a blossoming kamal talai or lotus pond, rendered using pure silver leafing and pigments on cotton.
Pichwai painting is a devotional textile art tradition from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, created to be hung behind the murti of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple. Traditionally rendered in natural pigments, gold, and silver leaf on cloth, Pichwai paintings depict the deity across the seasons and festivals of the Pushtimarg devotional calendar, combining fine detail with a scale meant to fill and frame the sanctum itself.
The deity is depicted in his iconic pose, with his left hand raised gracefully, draped in rich garments adorned with intricate patterns and a cascading garland of pink lotus petals. His radiant face, painted in deep indigo, is framed by a magnificent peacock feather crown and layers of exquisite pearl and gemstone jewelry. He holds a kamal chadi or lotus stalks along with his flute in his right hand. At his feet, ritualistic Bhog, Prasad Dibbi, and a Jaldani (Water Pot) are presented.
Flanking him are two gopis dressed in green and orange traditional garments - which a ghagra, choli and dupatta, ornamented in pearl head accessories, bangles, necklaces, earrings and anklets, as they hold a fan and fly whisk. Beside each of the gopis are gopalas, each with their own herd of five cows. The gopalas are dressed in dhotis and angavastra and jewellery, with a danda in their hands. The cows are also adorned with necklaces and have orange handprints on them, signifying the divine protection and connection to Krishna. The orange feet and heads of the cows reflect the festive temple traditions of Nathdwara, where the cows were adorned during daily rituals and celebrations.
The entire scene is set in a forest, with trees, on the banks of the river Yamuna with lotus blooms and buds in the foreground. The sun has been personified as the sun god witnessing this divinity from above. The painting is worked against a creme background with faint floral patterns, double bordered, with a layer of orange and blue flowers attached to their vines with leaves followed by a terracotta-red border, giving us the experience to be one with this scene.
