This is a beautifully crafted terracotta sound amplifier and functional speaker shaped like a gramophone in Khavda Pottery by Abdul Kumbhar.
Khavda pottery is an ancient, centuries-old craft from the Kutch district of Gujarat, India. Traditionally practiced in Khavda and neighboring Gundiyali villages, it relies on a specific local mud called "Rann ki Mitti" and is intricately hand-painted using entirely natural pigments, reflecting styles that date back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Before painting, the pots are coated with Geru, a red soil that gives the pieces their characteristic earthy, reddish-brown color. The decorative motifs are then applied using black (derived from ground black stone) and white (from local white clay).
The Khavda Pottery Sound Amplifier is a zero-electricity, eco-friendly passive acoustic speaker crafted using centuries-old terracotta techniques. This innovative lifestyle product fuses the traditional art of Khavda painted pottery originating from the Indus Valley Civilization with modern utility. A signature element of Khavda pottery is the precise use of white and black dots arranged in specific arrays over a terracotta base.
