About the Artwork +
Experience the lively and fascinating art of Cheriyal Scroll painting from Telangana, India. This visual storytelling tradition unfolds on long, brightly coloured scrolls populated by energetic figures. These captivating narratives bring to life Hindu epics, local legends, and even current social topics through a distinctly identifiable artistic lens. This stunning Cheriyal Scroll painting by Sai Kiran captures the rustic charm and everyday life of rural India through a vivid and dynamic scene featuring a traditional bullock cart journey. Dominating the composition is a majestic pair of white bulls, ornately decorated with golden harnesses and expressive eyes, pulling a robust wooden cart. The cart, drawn in warm tones of mustard and gold, is steered by a male figure dressed in a blue dhoti with a golden waistband. His posture and attentive expression reflect his command over the reins, highlighting his role as both navigator and caretaker of the animals. Behind the cart, a woman clad in a green and orange saree balances a woven basket atop her head with practiced grace, suggesting she is either heading to the market or returning from the fields. Her jewelry and traditional attire underscore the cultural richness of the Telangana countryside. The bold red background, a signature of the Cheriyal style, brings energy and warmth to the scene, while the thick black outlines and stylized forms enhance clarity and drama. The ornate yellow border, adorned with floral and geometric motifs, frames the narrative beautifully. Through this single frame, the artist pays tribute to the timeless rhythm of rural life, the partnership between man, animal, and land, and the resilience of those who live in harmony with nature. It’s a poignant reflection of both tradition and movement, rendered with Sai Kiran’s distinctive flair and deep respect for the folk heritage of Cheriyal scroll art.
