About the Artwork +
This masterfully graphic Gond painting by Manoj Kumar Tekam captures a lone jackal (Siyar) winding its body gracefully around a central forest tree. The monochromatic layout relies on a calculated breakdown of signature tribal textures to distinguish the animal's form from the organic, pointillist wilderness.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors, and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
The Siyar is depicted looping behind the main tree trunk, its anatomy cleverly segmented into two distinct pattern fields. Its upper back and curved neck section are covered in a dense, undulating sequence of black and white camouflage bands. In sharp contrast, its lower torso and flank transition completely into a field of Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), executed as uniform, repeating rows of concentric crescent scales. The jackal's head is accented with a soft terracotta-red wash, detailed with fine line-shading that frames its alert, almond-shaped eyes as it peers out in profile.
The artwork beautifully showcases the signature patterns of the artist Manoj Tekam, which are highly symbolic in nature and inspired by the daily life of the Gond community. The central tree trunk and its towering, cloud-like canopy are meticulously rendered using a massive field of thousands of fine ink dots representing Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds), also known as Rai, emphasizing agricultural importance. The parallel lines tracking the animal's slender legs follow the tight, woven structure of the Beni (braid) custom, emphasizing how traditional motifs give structure to the forest landscape.
This striking composition serves as a sophisticated testament to the fluid spatial mechanics and spiritual philosophies inherent to the Gond tribal identity. By wrapping the jackal’s dynamic, bi-textured frame directly into the rooted geometry of the sacred tree, Manoj Kumar Tekam masterfully visualizes a central tenant of animistic lore, where the hunter, the prey, and the landscape do not merely inhabit the forest, but actively shape and define one another's existence. The resulting interplay between flat color washes and meticulous pointillist stippling delivers a powerful narrative statement on the inescapable unity binding the wild with the cosmic order.
