About the Artwork +
Showcasing a striking Madhubani painting by Izhar Ansari as he brings forth a beautiful reinterpretation of Amrita Sher-Gil's iconic masterpiece, "Group of Three Girls". The artwork seamlessly blends the distinctive features of Madhubani folk art from the Mithila region of Bihar, India, known for its intricate line work and vibrant colors, with a classic Modern Indian portrait.
Against a bright, luminous yellow backdrop—a hallmark of Madhubani style—three stylized female figures are arranged in close composition. This signature element creates an immediate sense of warmth and energy. While the colors may be different from those used by Amrita Sher-Gil, the painting powerfully conveys a similar emotional resonance. The central figure, positioned slightly forward and to the right, is wearing a red sari with a broad white border. She is adorned with a pattern of orange and white circles. To her left, another woman is depicted in profile, wearing a rich green sari embellished with evenly spaced yellow dots. She wears a red earring. A third woman is partially visible behind the central figure, facing to the left and wearing a red sari with larger yellow dots.
All three figures exhibit the characteristic large, almond-shaped eyes outlined in bold black, a defining feature of Madhubani painting that lends a sense of expressiveness and directness to the subjects. The use of flat colors and the absence of shading are consistent with the traditional techniques of Madhubani art, where the focus is on intricate patterns and strong outlines to convey form and emotion.
Through "Three Girls," Izhar Ansari masterfully bridges cultural and temporal contexts. By embedding a clear visual reference to Amrita Sher Gil's work within the framework of traditional Madhubani aesthetics, Ansari creates a captivating dialogue between a modern Indian masterpiece and a traditional folk art, resulting in a unique and thought-provoking contemporary Madhubani work.
