About the Artwork +
Experience the lively and fascinating art of Cheriyal Scroll painting from Telangana, India. This visual storytelling tradition unfolds on long, brightly coloured scrolls populated by energetic figures. These captivating narratives bring to life Hindu epics, local legends, and even current social topics through a distinctly identifiable artistic lens. This vibrant Cheriyal scroll painting by contemporary artist Sai Kiran beautifully captures a slice of rural domestic life with intricate detail and traditional aesthetics. Rendered in the signature bold colors and stylized forms of the Cheriyal tradition, the artwork depicts three women immersed in their daily chores against the backdrop of a rustic village scene. At the center, two women are seated, engrossed in grinding grains using a traditional stone grinder. The woman on the left, clad in a green sari with floral motifs, reaches out gracefully with a small container, while the woman in the middle, dressed in an orange blouse and patterned brown lower garment, holds a pestle with calm concentration. Their postures and adornments—nose rings, bangles, and earrings—emphasize feminine grace and cultural richness. The third woman stands beside them, carrying a water pot on her head with practiced ease, her dynamic posture and gesturing hand adding a sense of motion to the composition. She is dressed in a striking blue sari with yellow borders, and her confident stance suggests the strength and rhythm of daily rural life. The backdrop features a tiled-roof house and a lush green tree, framed within a vivid red background that heightens the visual drama. The yellow and black floral border, a signature element of Cheriyal scrolls, encapsulates the scene like a narrative panel. This painting not only celebrates the communal and laborious spirit of women but also preserves the timeless storytelling essence of the Cheriyal art form, rooted deeply in Telangana’s cultural heritage.
