This divine Madhubani painting by Abdhesh Kumar Karn presents a deeply spiritual and meditative portrait of Lord Buddha, combining the serene iconography of Buddhist art with the intricate geometric precision of the Mithila school.
Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, is a folk art tradition of the Mithila region in north Bihar, sustained for centuries by women of the household who painted on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes. Characterized by complex geometrical patterns, these paintings are known for representing ritual content for particular occasions, including festivals and religious rituals. A defining principle of this tradition is the complete filling of the canvas with elaborate background texturing, ensuring that no negative space remains blank.
At the centre of the artwork is the beautifully rendered face of Lord Buddha positioned directly in the center of the canvas. His face is in a slightly elongated heart shape, featuring a long, sharp nose, gently curved lips and large, stylized fish-shaped eyes painted half-closed to convey deep inner meditation. His hair is styled in traditional tight, snail-like curls (ushnisha) executed in thick black ink. The skin is rendered in a solid cream tone, providing a smooth and tranquil visual anchor against the highly detailed background.
Radiating outward from Buddha's face is a magnificent, sprawling mandala composed of numerous concentric circles that form a brilliant cosmic halo. Each ring of this circular design features a unique, repeating geometric motif meticulously drawn by hand. The background beyond the central halo is a light yellow, indicative of his divine energy.
The composition is enclosed within a traditional geometric border that provides a stately frame to the spiritual portrait. The frame consists of multiple squares with criss-cross patterns in them and fine lines throughout, providing a perfect grounding balance to the packed interior.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
