This colourful Bengal Pattachitra by Anwar Chitrakar depicts a Durga Pujo procession moving through the city of Kolkata. The artwork masterfully bridges traditional sacred iconography with modern urban heritage, capturing the lively, communal joy of Bengal's greatest cultural festival.
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting and storytelling art from West Bengal, created on cloth or handmade paper using natural pigments. It is characterized by intricate linework, vibrant colours, narrative panels and depictions of mythological tales, folk legends and social themes, often accompanied by oral storytelling traditions.
At the center of the composition is a truck transporting a full traditional idol set of Saparibara Durga (Durga Parivar) through the city streets. On the mid-left, the enclosed cab of the vehicle is rendered in deep brown and black, with a driver and passenger seated inside. At the back, on the open base of the truck, sits a priest, next to the idols.
Mounted upon the flatbed is the entire divine family. The ten-armed Goddess Durga in her ten-armed form is depicted in a fierce posture, slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Dressed in a rich red patterned sari, the goddess stands with her lion vahana (simha), who stands upon the human form of the demon Mahishasura, while the Goddess thrusts her trishul (trident) downward. The demon's buffalo form lies below the simha. In her other arms she holds dhanushya-baan (bow and arrow), shankha-chakra (conch shell and discuss), gada (mace), padma (lotus) and khadga (curved sword).
Flanking the goddess are her four children. Standing on the lower left is Lord Ganesha with mushak (mouse), holding pasha and ankusha (noose and goad). Above him stands Goddess Lakshmi carrying a kalas that symbolises wealth, accompanied by her vahana white pehcha (owl). Standing on the upper right is Goddess Saraswati playing the veena, accompanied by her vahana hamsa (swan). Below her is the handsome warrior-god Kartikeya with mayura (peacock), holding a vel (spear).
Setting the scene firmly in the cultural heart of West Bengal, the upper background features two of Kolkata’s most famous architectural marvels. Looming on the upper left is the iconic Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), rendered in intricate dark geometric lattice-work against the bright blue sky. Spanning the upper right is the grand white marble facade of the Victoria Memorial, complete with its majestic central dome, surrounding cupolas, and arched windows.
Surrounding the moving vehicle is a lively crowd of city dwellers celebrating as a procession. Under the canopy of a lush green tree on the far left, traditional Dhakis (festive drummers) play large dhak drums and cymbals, providing the rhythmic pulse of the procession. Walking along the base near the truck's wheels are young children and devotees dancing in joy. On the far right, a dense gathering of men and women dressed in traditional Bengali attire, saris, dhotis and kurtas, raise their hands in joyous celebration and prayer.
The scene is executed in signature contemporary Bengal Pattachitra style, characterized by bold black contour lines that define every figure, paired with subtle Kalighat-inspired line shading along face contours and garments to give three-dimensional volume. The painting uses saturated fields of sky blue, terracotta orange, emerald green and deep crimson red, creating a visual narrative that captures the energetic spirit of Durga Pujo in Kolkata.
