This vibrant Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam depicts a stylized elephant rendered in an arched silhouette with rhythmic internal patterns. The artwork captures the majestic energy and organic grace of the majestic creature.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
The central subject, the elephant, is depicted with its head bowed low to the ground while its back arches upwards as a dome. Its long trunk loops into a coil beneath its face, accompanied by two white tusks curving outward. Large, fan-like ears extend horizontally from its lowered head, while its long, tapering legs are banded with rhythmic stripes, with a slender tail gliding along the right edge.
The artwork is built upon a mosaic of distinct Gond patterns. The vast expanse of the elephant's back is rendered in a dense, overlapping half-moon pattern filled with radiant shades of mustard yellow and warm orange, creating a glowing, sunlit effect. In contrast, the head and trunk are detailed with fine, scale motifs in soft pastels and red. The broad ears feature wavy horizontal bands of green, yellow and fine linear hatching. A similar pattern has been used for the legs.
A solid, deep red backdrop creates an intense color contrast, highlighting the warm yellows, greens and pinks of the elephant. The artist's signature motif is the 'Naag', inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. This distinctive pattern forms the foundation of her unique style. The entire figure is bounded by a crisp, luminous white contour line, haloing the intricate black line work and grounding the figure against the dark space.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
