About the Artwork +

This spectacular and beautifully balanced composition in Gond by Manoj Kumar Tekam focuses on a pair of forest goats resting beneath a trio of towering, sienna-barked trees, celebrating the serene harmony of the wild.

Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practiced by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors, and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.

The layout features two goats overlapping at the center of the frame. The larger, background goat is rendered in a clean silver-white tone, its coat fully filled with uniform fish-scale loops. Interlocking in front of it is a second goat rendered in a vibrant olive-green and gold palette. The torso of this forward animal is meticulously segmented into alternating diagonal bands: one band is filled with tightly woven line-work, while the adjacent band features sharp, chevron-striped lines mimicking Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes). Both animals are accented with bright turquoise ears that mirror each other.

The background trees showcase an incredible breakdown of the artist's signature lexicon. The three towering tree trunks are executed in a solid, fine-grain coat of Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds) stippling, dyed in a warm terracotta-orange pigment. The dense canopies sprawling behind them are formed by thousands of fine, hand-drawn leaf outlines. The hooves and facial features follow the flowing lines of the Beni (braid) custom, bringing a pulsing vitality to the frame.

The structural layout achieves a magnificent visual equilibrium, striking a flawless balance between dense ancestral texturing and clean modern negative space. By setting the vibrant, chevron-striped hides of the overlapping goats against the uniform, seed-like stippling of the ochre tree trunks, Tekam creates a rich tactile depth that honors the ancient practice of village wall decoration.

This masterfully orchestrated assembly captures the tranquil essence of a hidden woodland sanctuary, offering a stately and deeply affecting statement on the quiet, unyielding rhythms of nature that continue to inspire contemporary tribal art.
