This striking Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam presents a captivating visual of nature’s interconnectedness, depicting a grand elephant bowing gracefully towards the left. Through a silhouette that contains other creatures within its form, the artwork transforms the body of the elephant into a living sanctuary, celebrating the shared spirit of the forest.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
The composition is anchored by the elephant's arched body, which sweeps up in a smooth dome before bending down to the left. Its head is lowered, with its trunk curling upward at the tip and a small white tusk extending outward. At the upper-left corner, a striped tree branch curves alongside the outer contour of the elephant's back to frame the scene with an organic, canopy-like movement.
In a display of Gond visual storytelling, the interior of the elephant’s body functions as an entire ecosystem harboring forest wildlife. High near the arch of the spine, a slender, horned deer is depicted mid-stride. Lower within the body, two detailed fish appear to swim through the creature’s mass, one curving tightly in the mid-section and another gliding upward along the hind leg, representing the fusion of terrestrial and aquatic realms within a single cosmic entity.
The artwork showcases an astonishing variety of textural patternwork across its surface, such as stippled dots, alternating horizontal stripes, fine vertical lines and concentric scalloped arches. Adding a splash of color to the lower composition, the bases of the elephant's legs transition into red and blue, symbolizing earth and water.
Set against a flat, radiant mustard-yellow background, the monochromatic detailed figure stands out with remarkable clarity. The artist's signature motif - the 'Naag', is inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. A crisp white outline halos the entire elephant and branch, separating the intricate internal line work from the warm, expansive backdrop.
