This vibrant Bengal Pattachitra by Anwar Chitrakar depicts the legendary scene of Kamale Kamini (she who sits on the lotus), an iconic divine vision from the medieval Bengali epic Chandi Mangal. Through sweeping linework, bold color fields, and signature Bengal folk aesthetics, the artwork captures the magical moment when the merchant Srimanta Sadagar beholds the goddess floating upon the open sea.
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting and storytelling art from West Bengal, created on cloth or handmade paper using natural pigments. It is characterized by intricate linework, vibrant colours, narrative panels and depictions of mythological tales, folk legends and social themes, often accompanied by oral storytelling traditions.
The left portion of the canvas is dominated by the miraculous appearance of Goddess Chandi (Durga) emerging from the ocean. Rendered with ten arms (Dashabhuja), she wears a golden crown, fine jewelry and a rich red sari. Seated warmly on her lap is Lord Ganesha, in a bright orange complexion and blue lower garment. In the Bengali Kamale Kamini tradition, Ganesha emerging with the goddess upon the lotus symbolizes ultimate auspiciousness and divine power. The deities rest atop a multi-layered pink lotus flower with a dotted yellow center, anchored within a vibrant bed of blooming lotus buds and wide green lily pads floating on the water.
Approaching the goddess across the sea is a grand wooden vessel (Mayurpankhi Nauka). The boat is distinguished by a towering, beautifully carved peacock head at the bow, complete with a crest, detailed eye and decorative neck patterns. Seated centrally under a patterned, pink ceremonial umbrella (chhatra) are two noble figures, the merchant Srimanta Sadagar and his companion, attired in blue and pink robes with traditional turbans. They gaze at the deities with their hands raised in folded reverence (Anjali Mudra). Surrounding the noblemen are boatmen and attendants actively navigating the vessel using long wooden oars at both the bow and stern.
The upper horizon features stylized, scalloped clouds rendered in overlapping waves of blue, brown and white, a classic hallmark of Bengal scroll and Kalighat painting. A glowing orange sun rises at the center horizon, illuminating the sea. The ocean is depicted using dense, horizontal wavy blue lines that create a rippling texture beneath the boat and the floating lotus field.
The artwork relies on saturated, high-contrast mineral-style pigments, radiant pinks, deep ocean blues, fiery oranges and warm earth tones, bound together by thick, black contour lines. The entire narrative scene is neatly enclosed within a clean double border, consisting of a solid blue inner line and a bright yellow outer framing band that grounds the vibrant storytelling and energetic line-work, giving the piece a refined finish.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
