This Pichwai painting by Sushil Soni presents a serene and highly decorative depiction of Lord Krishna playing the flute, surrounded by an abundant field of blooming lotuses and lush green foliage.This work uses a soft, pale blue ground, allowing the delicate floral forms and the blue figure of Krishna to stand out clearly. The composition creates the impression of Krishna standing within an endless lotus garden, surrounded by the natural imagery closely associated with his divine and pastoral identity.
Pichwai painting developed in the Nathdwara tradition as devotional cloth paintings associated with the worship of Krishna. Floral imagery, particularly the lotus, became an important part of this visual vocabulary, often transforming the surface into an elaborate sacred environment. In this composition, the abundance of lotuses and foliage creates precisely such an environment, placing Krishna at the heart of a blooming devotional landscape.
At the centre-left of the painting, Lord Krishna stands upon a large lotus, which acts as the visual anchor of the composition. His body is rendered frontally, while his face is shown in profile, and he stands in a graceful cross-legged posture while playing the flute. His complexion is rendered in a distinctive dark-blue shade. He wears a white dhoti with delicate detailing and a crimson-red angavastram that falls on either side of his body, its borders highlighted with golden tones. His slender fingers are positioned around the flute as he plays, creating a sense of movement within the otherwise tranquil composition.
Krishna is richly adorned with devotional ornaments, including necklaces, earrings, bangles, amulets and anklets. His dark hair falls to his shoulders and is gathered into a bun, which is decorated with an elaborate peacock feathet head ornament. His face features the characteristic elongated, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose and small lips associated with the stylised devotional vocabulary of the Nathdwara tradition. A subtle green halo-like form surrounds his head, further distinguishing him from the surrounding floral landscape.
The lotus on which Krishna stands is surrounded by an extensive arrangement of lotus flowers, buds and leaves. The flowers appear in soft shades of peach, pink and warm ochre, while the leaves are rendered in varying shades of green. Their long, curving stems weave throughout the composition, creating a rhythmic network of lines across the pale blue ground. Some flowers are fully open, while others remain as buds, introducing variation and giving the floral field a sense of organic growth.
The repeated lotus motif is particularly significant within the composition. Rather than being confined to a single central flower, the lotus becomes an all-encompassing visual element, surrounding Krishna from every direction. This transforms the painting into an immersive sacred garden, with the deity positioned at its centre. The repeated flowers also create a sense of balance and rhythm, characteristic of the ornamental quality of Pichhwai painting.
The painting is enclosed within a decorative floral border. A narrow golden line separates the central composition from the border, while the outer frame is filled with repeated golden-yellow floral medallions interspersed with small green leaves and foliage.
The overall palette of pale blue, peach, ochre, green, crimson and gold gives the work a soft and tranquil character. The restrained background allows the flowers and foliage to remain visually prominent while Krishna's blue complexion creates a clear focal point. Through the repetition of the lotus, the flowing stems and the central image of the flute-playing Krishna, the painting evokes a peaceful devotional landscape in which nature itself appears to surround and celebrate the divine figure.
