This captivating Bengal Pattachitra by Anwar Chitrakar presents a multi-paneled visual narrative dedicated to the divine lilas of Lord Krishna.
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting and storytelling art from West Bengal, created on cloth or handmade paper using natural pigments. It is characterized by intricate linework, vibrant colours, narrative panels and depictions of mythological tales, folk legends and social themes, often accompanied by oral storytelling traditions.
The largest section of the artwork occupies the right half of the canvas, vividly illustrating the legend of the stealing of the gopis' clothes. Lord Krishna, depicted with his iconic blue complexion, is perched gracefully among the branches of a grand Kadamba tree that is dotted with red and yellow floral blossoms, playing his flute (bansuri). Hanging from the leafy branches are the colorful, patterned garments (saris) he playfully took while the maidens bathed.
Below the tree, five gopis are submerged in the lotus-filled waters of the Yamuna river. Their hands are folded and raised in modesty as they plead with Krishna to return their attire. Floating water pots (kalash) surround them, and four pristine white swans swim in a row across the foreground water. Behind the pond are traditional temple shrines featuring terracotta brickwork, domed roofs and tiered spires (shikharas) topped with red flags.
Running vertically down the left side are three distinct rectangular panels depicting scenes of divine romance and pastoral life. In the top panel, Radha and Krishna standing harmoniously together on a large, blooming pink lotus pedestal against a starry, dark blue night sky, flanked by peacocks. In the other panels, pastoral encounters between Krishna and Radha in the groves of Vrindavan have been depicted, showing figures carrying water jars beside trees and small lotus ponds.
The base of the canvas is divided into three horizontal panels continuing the story. The left panel depicts the episode of Kaliya Mardan, showing Krishna taming the multi-headed serpent Kaliya beside a seated gopi holding a water pot.The middle one shows Krishna standing in victory in the center surrounded by devotees standing in prayer postures (Anjali Mudra). The final panel is similar to the very first one, portraying joyous closing depiction of Radha and Krishna reunited on a lotus pedestal, with Krishna playing his flute.
The painting uses saturated, high-contrast mineral tones of forest greens, cobalt blues, terracotta reds, mustard yellows and pristine whites. Every character and element is defined by the Bengal style’s signature bold black contour lines and expressive, large almond-shaped eyes. The artwork is organized by a continuous, decorative border grid adorned with repeating golden floral blossoms set against a warm brown background. This structured perimeter divides each narrative episode while uniting the entire composition.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
