Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The composition is dominated by the standing figures of Krishna and Radha, upon a shared, oval lotus pedestal. Positioned on the left, Krishna is rendered in a deep, vibrant blue skin tone. His face features the classic Kalighat profile with sweeping almond-shaped eyes and a serene expression. He is captured in his iconic tribhanga (three-bend) standing posture, crossing one leg over the other, while his hands gracefully hold a slender flute (bansuri). He is draped in a yellow lower garment paired with a patterned shawl and sash.
Standing close beside him on the right, Radha is depicted with a calm expression, featuring the hallmark Kalighat profile, large almond eyes with a sharp nose. She wears a bright pink saree featuring delicate scalloped white borders, worn over a patterned blouse. Her hands gracefully support a golden kalash (sacred pot), heavily detailed with geometric bands, symbolizing overflowing wealth and spiritual abundance.
The narrative is enriched by exquisite ornamentation and shared divine iconography. Both deities are heavily adorned with matching golden crowns, along with white jewelry, including intricate pearl necklaces, armbands and beaded anklets. Radha wears traditional round earrings, while Krishna sports dangling gold earrings and a subtle crescent marking on his forehead. A massive, brilliant yellow halo edged with red flames radiates behind both figures, uniting them within a single field of divine energy.
The artwork utilizes a muted, mottled background that mimics the texture of aged parchment, acting as a quiet negative space to highlight the intensely colored central figures. The composition is balanced and unified, the interlocking postures of the divine couple creating an intimate focal point, while the radiating halo and shared lotus base enclose them in an eternal, sacred space.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
