Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The central focus of this composition is a magnificent pairing of a lion and a tiger resting together in the foreground. The lion, positioned slightly behind, features a warm yellow body and a stylized, dark mane rendered in a scalloped pattern that resembles overlapping scales. In front sits a striking tiger, its body adorned with rhythmic, bold black stripes across its bright orange coat. Both majestic beasts are painted with large, almond-shaped, slightly anthropomorphic eyes, a hallmark of the Kalighat style that imbues the animals with a soulful, expressive presence.
Perched playfully atop the curve of the lion's back are two small tiger cubs. They share the exact same feline facial structure, pointed ears and bold black striping as the adult tiger. The cubs sit facing one another, creating a gentle, mirrored symmetry. This interaction adds a layer of tenderness to the otherwise imposing presence of the apex predators, turning the scene into a peaceful, unified family portrait.
The painting utilizes a striking color palette, relying on the vibrant contrast between the warm hues of the animals and the stark black of their stripes and outlines. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
