This lovely Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar offers a captivating, monochromatic interpretation of Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity and remover of obstacles. The artwork strips away colorful distractions, utilising the precise brushwork to depict the divine humor of Ganesha enjoying his favorite sweets to take center stage.
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The composition is entirely dominated by the robust, majestic figure of the four-armed Ganesha seated in a stylized posture with his knees splayed outward. His iconic face is drawn in a striking profile typical of the Kalighat style, featuring a large, expressive almond-shaped eye with a heavy black outline. A beautifully ornamented crown rests upon his head. His most prominent feature, his long, sweeping trunk, curves gracefully down across his body and dips directly into a plate bowl filled with laddoos held in his lower left hand. His two upper hands are raised with fingers delicately poised, while his lower right hand is raised in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness)..
Framing Ganesha’s face are his fan-like ears, which are filled with dense stippling that contrasts beautifully with the smooth shading of his face and body. Ganesha is adorned with elegant jewelry, including armbands, bracelets and anklets, and a sheer, finely cross-hatched necklace drapes across his chest. His lower garment is rendered with bold stripes and curved lines.
The artwork utilizes a brilliant, monochromatic palette consisting entirely of parchment-like beiges, earthy browns and matte blacks. The background is left completely unadorned, resembling a wash of antique paper, which highlights the figure of Lord Ganesha.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
