"This magnificent Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam captures a symmetrical, highly stylized pair of peacocks standing beneath a tree.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
The lower half of the composition is dominated by two majestic peacocks standing face-to-face, their slender blue bodies leaning inward until their necks align and their beaks meet in a tender, intimate gesture. Extending outward from their backs are sweeping, fan-like plumage displays with serrated, flame-like borders that fill the middle register of the canvas with radiant warmth.
Rising directly behind the pair is a large tree whose flared roots anchor the base of the composition. While its trunk ascends between the two peacocks, its upper limbs split into an elaborate, branching network that expands across the top half of the canvas. In striking visual counterpoint to the colorful birds below, the entire tree canopy is rendered in monochrome, featuring fine grey bark hatching and thousands of tiny, stippled leaf motifs clustered along every branch like fine lace.
The artwork thrives on a captivating contrast between the vivid lower registry and the graphic, linear canopy above. The artist's signature motif is the 'Naag', inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. This distinctive pattern forms the foundation of her unique style. Set against a plain background, the composition uses the natural outer contours of the flame-like feathers and sprawling branches to form an organic, self-contained frame.This composition presents a joyous celebration of romantic harmony, natural grace and sacred shelter.
