Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
At the heart of the composition sits Prakriti Devi, resting peacefully in a grounded posture with her knees drawn up and her hands gently framing her face. Her pale skin serves as a pristine canvas for striking, radiant floral mandalas that adorn her knees and torso, marking her body as sacred ground. She possesses the signature Kalighat facial features, a bold, stylized profile, sharp nose and large, captivating almond-shaped eyes. She sits upon a beautifully detailed, stylized lotus base that is teeming with colorful, interwoven aquatic life and fishes, firmly rooting her in the life-giving waters of the earth.
The most breathtaking element of the painting is the majestic transformation occurring at the crown of the Goddess's head. Her hair organically morphs into the sturdy trunk and sprawling, dense branches of a massive tree. This lush canopy is heavily populated with an array of vibrant, stylized birds rendered in bright blues, reds, yellows and whites, illustrating nature's thriving abundance.
Encircling this entire tree is a spectacular narrative halo formed by a wide, circular band filled with meticulous, miniature illustrations of human figures, animals and village life. This intricate ring acts as a microcosm of the world, emphasizing that humanity and wildlife are equally sheltered and sustained by the overarching canopy of Mother Nature. A fringe of pointed green leaves encloses this cosmic wheel.
The artwork is anchored by a deep, solid forest-green background that perfectly complements the environmental theme while highlighting the warm peaches, bright blues and vibrant reds of the central motifs. The composition is organized around strong circular geometries that radiate outward from the Goddess, symbolizing cycles of life and holistic unity. Flanking the seated deity on both sides are green plant stalks that sprout from the lower corners. Adorned with delicate, blooming flowers, these stalks frame the Goddess and guide the viewer's eye upward toward the magnificent halo of life above her.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata.
