This captivating Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar is a serene and atmospheric rendition of a classic mythological scene. Depicting Radha and Krishna in a moment of intimate dialogue, the artwork uses the bold, sweeping linework of the traditional Kalighat style and an almost monochromatic color palette.
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
At the heart of the composition, Radha and Krishna are seated gracefully side-by-side on a delicately patterned swing, engaged in a quiet, animated conversation. Lord Krishna’s skin is rendered in a vibrant blue that seamlessly blends with the surrounding environment, while Radha stands out with a warm, terracotta complexion. She holds a beautifully detailed water pot securely at her waist. Both figures are adorned in flowing garments marked by black and white lines to depict draped fabric. A shared halo unites them, emphasizing their divine connection.
The scene is beautifully framed by the natural world. Anchoring the left side of the canvas is a sturdy, dark tree trunk. Its thick branches stretch broadly across the top of the canvas, forming a protective canopy of leaves that shelters the divine couple and supports the ropes of their swing. At the base of the scene, the pastoral harmony is completed by three sacred animals. A gentle cow rests comfortably,with a peacock by its side, while another peacock stands in the background.
The most defining feature of this artwork is its breathtaking, monochromatic blue wash. Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
