This exquisite Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar brings a chapter of the Ramayana to life, depicting Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman during their forest exile (Vanavas).
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The composition is anchored by the seated figures of Lord Ram and Sita on the left side of the canvas. Both figures share the hallmark Kalighat profiles with large, expressive, half-closed eyes that project an aura of calm and wisdom. They are draped in elegant, crisp white garments intricately detailed with fine stripes and dark green borders. They are heavily adorned with golden necklaces and ornaments. Ram holds his right hand up in a gentle conversational gesture, while Sita engages animatedly, pointing with one hand and holding a cluster of leaves in the other.
To the right of the divine couple. a little away, sits Lakshman. As the dutiful brother and protector, he faces slightly outward while glancing back toward them, holding a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other, with a quiver slung across his back. Behind the figures, the subtle, geometric outlines of a thatched forest hut can be seen, emphasizing their ascetic lifestyle.
The natural world is heavily stylized, with a magnificent tree towering over the scene. Its canopy bursts into a dense umbrella of rich green leaves. Adding to the mystical forest atmosphere are three deer. Their bodies and antlers are ingeniously filled with the exact leafy patterns of the surrounding vegetation, weaving them seamlessly into the fabric of the forest.
The artwork is immersed in a lush, monochromatic green palette that perfectly captures the dense atmosphere of the Dandaka forest. At the very base of the canvas, rows of leafy plants dotted with tiny yellow blossoms anchor the composition. The overarching canopy of the central tree beautifully frames the upper half of the painting, balancing the weight of the figures and wildlife below.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
