This exquisite Pichwai painting by artist Dinesh Soni presents a beautiful representation of Sharad Purnima, the autumn full moon night associated with the Maharaas in Pushtimarg tradition.
Pichwai is a celebrated artform originating from Rajasthan, with its roots deeply entrenched in the Nathdwara region. The term ‘pichwai’ refers to intricate paintings traditionally hung on the back walls of temples. These beautifully detailed compositions serve a sacred purpose, created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, a seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna.
At the center of the compositionis the standing figure of Shrinathji, positioned under a marble architectural sanctum. His raised left hand symbolised the act of lifting Mount Govardhana, while his right hand rests at his waist, holding a kamalchadi (lotus stem) and a murali (flute). The deity’s facial expressions are placid and calm, with kamalnayan (lotus-shaped eyes), a broad nose with a pearl nath (nose-ring), fuller lips and a diamond on the chin. He wears a gold-ornate crown with a peacock feather (morpankh) at the top. Rendered in his characteristic dark complexion, he is dressed in resplendent garments of red green and yellow, adorned with ornaments including pearl strings, gold chains, stone-studded jewellery pieces and a lotus garland. His ornamanted braid flows rhythmically, as the offerings of jaldani (water pot), prasad dibbi and paan beeda lie by his feet.
Flanking him on both sides are groups of gopis, dressed in traditional Rajasthani attire, compising of a ghagra, choli and odhani. The upper register is occupied by the celestial beings, mounted on their vahana,their chariots filling up the moonlight, star-studded, deep blue sky. These are Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati with their swan, Lord Indra and his consort Indrayini on Airavata, Lord Shiva with Parvati and Narada; witnessing the divine presence of Lord Vishnu on the earth.
The atmosphere is filled with lush vegetation of banana, kadamba, mango trees and other flowering trees, while the foreground is occupied by the presence of lpeacocks, swans and other birds, symbolising prosperity. The rendition of the blooming lotuses in the Yamuna river is depicted naturalistically, with several fish swimming in it.
The frame is enclosed with a broad border of mustard yellow backdrop, depicting the cows and a peacock at the centre. These white cows display saffron handprints on their bodies, symbolising Krishna's presence and protcetion towards his beloved companions, highlighting his role as Gopala, further enclosed with another thinner border of floral motifs.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.

Returns and Replacements
