This deeply moving Kalighat painting by Anwar Chitrakar captures one of the most poignant and dramatic narratives in Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva wandering the cosmos in inconsolable grief while carrying the lifeless body of his consort, Sati.
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
The composition is entirely anchored by the figures of Shiva and Sati. Lord Shiva is depicted mid-stride, bearing the tragic weight of his wife over his shoulders. He is depicted in his vibrant, icy blue skin, a prominent third eye on his forehead and a thick, stark black beard and mustache. His dark hair is tied in a topknot (jata), wears a tiger-skin garment and carries his Trishul (trident).
Over his shoulder rests the tragic figure of Sati, draped in a bright orange sari. Her pale face hangs lifelessly downward, her eyes closed in death, while a striking third eye marks her forehead. Her magnificent, jet-black hair cascades toward the bottom of the canvas, conveying the heaviness of death.
The artwork utilizes a stark, unadorned background of mottled, earthy beige, reminiscent of aged paper. This negative space completely isolates the figures in their private universe of grief, highlighting the tragedy. Through bold, sweeping linework and striking color contrasts, a story of cosmic sorrow is elevated into a visually arresting, monumental tableau.

Kalighat painting is a traditional Indian art form that originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. It is known for its bold lines, vibrant colors, and minimal backgrounds, influencing artists like Jamini Roy. Initially devotional souvenirs for pilgrims, the themes expanded to include social satires, depicting figures like Goddess Kali, Babu & Bibi, and Cat with the Fish. Artists, known as 'patuas,' used natural pigments on paper or cloth, sometimes incorporating European realism for British patrons. Although it declined with the rise of machine prints, recent efforts by artists, government, and connoisseurs are reviving this culturally and historically significant art form through exhibitions and workshops.
