About the Artwork +
Pithora art, a vibrant and sacred mural tradition of the Rathwa and Bhilala tribes in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, transcends mere decoration. Typically adorning house walls as religious offerings, particularly to Pithora Dev, this folk art finds a contemporary expression in the minimalistic canvases of master artist Chanchal Soni. Her work captures the lively essence of a Bus Yatra, a cherished mode of travel in India's rural and semi-urban landscapes, through the dynamic lens of Pithora's artistic spirit.. Dominated by a bold, beautifully painted blue bus, the scene showcases the joyful experience of a shared journey. The bus, adorned with rhythmic patterns and intricate detailing in shades of pink, green, and white, exudes festivity and movement. Through the arched windows, six smiling passengers are visible, each dressed in colorful traditional attire, exuding warmth and excitement. Their expressive faces, hand gestures, and bright clothing reflect the communal nature of rural life—where travel is not just about reaching a destination but about sharing stories, laughter, and a sense of togetherness. At the front of the bus, the driver, wearing a turban, is captured mid-motion, his expression joyful and focused as he maneuvers the vehicle. The wheels, radiating with symmetrical, flower-like designs, and the bus frame’s ornamented borders, are rendered in the classic Pithora style, showcasing a fusion of tradition and contemporary subject matter. The bus’s structure curves gracefully at the top, adorned with a checkerboard of colors, symbolizing festivity and vibrancy. Each detail in this piece—from the horn at the front to the subtle motion lines—celebrates the cultural richness and simplicity of daily life. Through her playful yet profound style, Soni transforms a common scene into an artful story of movement, unity, and joyful coexistence, preserving folk traditions while celebrating modern India.
