About the Artwork +
This striking painting by Anwar Chitrakar depicts a captivating, stylized scene of a monkey feeding a crocodile from the safety of a tree, with the crocodile's wife in the background. This scene is a narrative from the popular moral story "The Crocodile and The Monkey" that emphasises the importance of quick thinking in the face of a crisis. The part of the story portrayed here is the budding friendship between the monkey and crocodile.
Kalighat Painting is a traditional folk art form from Kolkata, West Bengal, known for its bold brushstrokes, expressive figures, and minimalistic compositions. It is characterized by strong flowing outlines, vibrant colours and themes ranging from Hindu mythology to social satire and scenes of everyday urban life.
A clever monkey living in a fruit-laden tree by the river strikes up a warm friendship with a crocodile, generously sharing sweet berries with him every day. Touched by the gift, the crocodile takes some fruit home to his wife, whose greed is ignited when she demands to eat the monkey's heart, reasoning that it must taste as sweet as the fruit he eats. Torn between loyalty and his wife's insistence, the crocodile invites the monkey home for dinner and offers him a ride across the river on his back; however, halfway through the deep water, the crocodile remorsefully reveals the deadly plan. Thinking on his feet, the quick-witted monkey claims he left his heart safely hanging back on the tree branch and must return to fetch it. The gullible crocodile swims back to the bank, where the monkey instantly scrambles up into the high branches, scolding the crocodile for his betrayal and ending their friendship for good.
The central focus of this composition is the large, highly stylized crocodile occupying the foreground. Textured with scales, the creature's body bends in a dramatic curve. Its massive jaws are thrown wide open, displaying a prominent tongue and sharp, precise teeth. The crocodile’s eye is a striking focal point, a wide, concentric circular motif characteristic of lasting, traditional Patachitra style.
Anchoring the right side of the canvas is a sprawling tree with intricately patterned, dense foliage. Perched precariously within its sweeping branches is the small monkey. The narrative of the piece centers on this interaction, the monkey leans outward, extending a hand to drop a fruit directly into the giant crocodile's open mouth, a motion illustrated by a delicate dotted line tracking the object's descent.
Adding depth to this narrative, the crocodile's wife is depicted as a smaller crocodile in the mid-ground, swimming in the waters behind. The background is divided spatially into distinct zones using texture and pattern to create a sense of natural harmony. The sky and upper canopy are filled with a smooth, light blue, while the lake in the mid-ground is defined by rhythmic, horizontal lines that give the water a serene quality.
The foreground ground plane is rendered in muted beige tones, populated with stylized, fern-like shrubs that add organic texture to the base of the scene. The interwoven branches of the tree organically frame the upper right quadrant, directing the viewer's eye back down toward the open jaws of the central beast and creating a structured visual narrative.
