About the Artwork +

Originating in the tribal Gond community, which lives in close communion with nature, these paintings portray a strong belief that every aspect of nature is animate and sacred. This enchanting Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam is a vibrant testament to the intricate and mesmerizing style of this indigenous Indian art form. The central composition is dominated by two majestic, stylized trees, featuring textured trunks, filled with delicate patterns in orange, pink, and olive green, and a dense, sprawling canopy of leaves. The foliage bursts with color, showcasing shades of green, red, yellow, and blue, all intricately outlined and filled with delicate patterns, a hallmark of Gond detailing.

At the base of the tree, taking a prominent position, are a pair of magnificently stylized birds. Their bodies are richly adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, primarily yellow, orange, and green. Their forms are dynamic, suggesting movement and life as they nestle near the tree's roots. The scene is further enlivened by several smaller, equally vibrant birds scattered at the bottom. These smaller birds also exhibit unique patterns and splashes of color, adding to the overall biodiversity and narrative of the piece. The painting proudly showcases Saroj ji's signature style, the Naag pattern, made of many small vertical lines with slight curves, a tribute to her Naagvanshi lineage.

The entire painting is a beautiful example of Gond art's ability to tell a story through its distinctive style, with every element meticulously detailed and connected to create a cohesive and captivating piece that celebrates the harmony of nature.
