This stunning and serene Gond painting by Manoj Tekam documents a peaceful moment within a blossoming forest shrub, focusing on a trio of stylized songbirds nesting comfortably within the foliage.
Gond painting is a vibrant tribal art form from Madhya Pradesh, practised by the Gond community. It is celebrated for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and deep connection to nature. Traditionally used to decorate village mud walls, the art has evolved into a globally recognized style.
This serene nature scene focuses on a trio of plum-colored songbirds nesting within a bi-textured forest tree. The vertical layout centers a single, central tree trunk rising from the roots and is filled from top to bottom with an extraordinarily fine application of Sarson ke daane (mustard seeds) stippling, giving the bark a rough, organic grain. The canopy is explicitly divided into two texturally distinct halves, the upper crown consists of a wide, fan-like network of fine grey leaves, while the lower body transforms into a massive, cloud-like bush composed of thousands of tightly packed green clover blossoms.
Perched gracefully within the upper branches and resting atop the lower bush are three large, plum-colored birds. The birds' plumage is defined by an energetic use of Gehu ke baal (wheat spikes), where rows of bright blue concentric loops track across their wings and chests to emulate layered feathers. The lower canopy moves away from these signature motifs, transforming into a massive, dense cluster of green clover outlines that beautifully offset the fine-line pointillism of the central trunk.
This composition depicts the interconnectedness between the forest and its beings, reflecting on the Gond worldview of harmonious co-existence.
