This extraordinary Gond painting by Saroj Venkat Shyam presents a striking depiction of forest life, illustrating the interconnectedness of nature. The artwork weaves together tigers, deer, birds and botanical forms into a harmonious, interdependent ecosystem where every creature supports and nurtures another.
Gond art is a traditional Indian tribal art form practiced by the Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, acting as cultural memory and often depicting local deities, folklore, forests and animals that the community lived alongside. It is deeply connected to nature, with animals, trees, birds, rivers symbolising balance and coexistence.
At the foundation of the artwork stand two tigers extending outward in opposite directions, joined at the center by a single, shared forward-facing head. Beneath their legs and around their paws, a flock of vibrant blue and red birds flutters in harmony near the powerful predators. Standing directly along the broad backs of these dual tigers are four agile deer, positioned side-by-side with heads raised in alert grace. Perched quietly upon the back of each deer is a small, colorful bird, creating an intricate double tier of peaceful coexistence.
Crowning the entire ensemble is a magnificent, oversized deer whose elevated posture dominates the upper half of the composition. From its head erupts a breathtaking set of sprawling antlers that stretch outward into a lush, tree-like canopy of striped branches adorned with delicate foliage. These branching antlers weave across the upper canvas to form a protective botanical shelter, blurring the boundary between fauna and flora.
The painting employs a rich and intentional color palette that distinguishes each layer while maintaining visual unity. The lower tigers glow in warm mustard yellows and deep maroon stripes, while the deer above feature vibrant fields of leaf-green and earthy brown detailed with fine stippling and line work.
Set against a textured paper ground, the composition relies on natural negative space to highlight the central figures. The artist's signature motif is the 'Naag', inspired by the form of a snake, which she calls 'Naagvanshi Shyam'. This distinctive pattern forms the foundation of her unique style. Through this artwork, the core Gond philosophy of sacred ecology is translated into a breathtaking visual of life supporting life.
