This striking Bengal Pattachitra by Anwar Chitrakar visualizes the interconnectedness of human existence and tribal life. Blending traditional storytelling techniques with an energetic composition, the artwork showcases community, nature and the continuous flow of life.
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting and storytelling art from West Bengal, created on cloth or handmade paper using natural pigments. It is characterized by intricate linework, vibrant colours, narrative panels and depictions of mythological tales, folk legends and social themes, often accompanied by oral storytelling traditions.
At the center of the piece is a blue solar deity featuring large, almond-shaped eyes with red sclera and a radiating crown of stylized rays, placing the sun as a central part of all life. Nestled within a circular halo right below this celestial figure sits a domestic couple in traditional attire, engaged in a quiet, intimate moment inside a golden circle. This central motif positions the human domestic unit as the voice and heart of existence and life.
Unfurling outward from the center is a massive, winding path made of segmented narrative panels. This ribbon-like pathway spirals through concentric rings of tribal village life. Within these panels, dozens of figures, painted in warm ochres, rich browns and deep blues, are depicted singing, playing traditional percussion instruments like the dhol and madal, dancing in community circles, farming and gathering under thatched-roof huts. The movement along the spiral creates a sense of communal celebration and daily ritual.
Enclosing this central human spiral is a vast, dense ecosystem of terrestrial, aerial and aquatic wildlife. The upper portion is densely packed with animals including elephants, spotted leopards, lions, rhinos, horses, camels, deer, sacred bulls and birds, depicting the ecosystem of the forest. At the very base of the canvas, the narrative pathway plunges into a vast sea rendered in shades of blue and filled with a teeming swarm of stylized fish, aquatic creatures, and a circular medallion enclosing livestock and birds, reinforcing the foundational role of water in sustaining life.
The composition relies on a dynamic balance of circular geometries and a continuous spiral, drawing the viewer's eye inward toward the solar deity before sending it sweeping outward through the layers of creation. Set against a lush, textured forest-green backdrop, the color palette is anchored by natural earth tones, warm terracottas, sunny yellows and deep ochres, punctuated by cerulean blue, leaf green and white outlines that give each figure its distinct, expressive presence.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
