This exquisite mixed-media artwork brings together two distinct Indian craft traditions, Dhokra lost-wax metal casting and Kutchi embroidery, to portray a charming bird against a hand-stitched textile backdrop. Blending the luminous metallic weight of antique brass with the soft, tactile elegance of traditional needlework, the piece captures folk charm and layered visual storytelling in a single harmonious composition.
Dhokra is an ancient lost-wax metal casting technique practiced for thousands of years by tribal metalworkers across Central and Eastern India, celebrated for its rustic finish, fine brass threading and raw folk geometry. Complementing this metal craft is Kutchi embroidery, a celebrated textile art from the Kutch district of Gujarat, known for its intricate threadwork, vibrant folk iconography and signature abla (mirror-work) embedded into fabric to reflect light and bring good fortune. By combining the sculptural weight of cast brass with the soft, detailed surface of hand-stitched cotton, the artwork creates a compelling bridge between indigenous metalwork and rural textile traditions.
At the center of the composition stands the brass bird, posed in profile facing toward the left with an alert and curious stance. Its head is cast smoothly with a short, pointed beak and a defined round eye, while its torso is covered in an array of raised, spherical brass domes that give the body a textured coat of feathers. Extending from its back is a wide tail marked with parallel ridges that catch the light, while two slender, articulated legs terminate in detailed clawed feet.
The metal sculpture is mounted upon a soft, light cotton fabric ground filled with delicate, hand-stitched Kutchi motifs that weave around the central figure. Rendered in fine threads of terracotta red, slate blue, sage green and earthy brown, these folk drawings include stylized fish gliding above and below the bird, animals, radiating starburst rosettes and avian silhouettes. Subtle dashed running stitches meander across the negative space, linking the diverse motifs into a fluid visual narrative.
Enclosing the entire scene is a multi-tiered embroidered border that structures the narrative panel. Concentric bands of red and blue zigzag stitching form the inner and outer boundaries, framing a middle row of small, circular abla mirrors bound by rings of green thread. Set within a clean, light-wood frame, the artwork portrays Indian heritage craft and natural elegance.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
