This elegant mixed-media artwork brings together two celebrated Indian craft traditions, Dhokra metal casting and Kutchi embroidery, to portray a graceful, slender deer mounted against a hand-embroidered textile ground. Combining the luminous, rustic charm of brass metalwork with the delicate tactile qualities of folk needlework, the piece captures gentle wildlife grace and rural heritage in a harmonious composition.
Dhokra is an ancient lost-wax metal casting technique practiced for thousands of years by tribal metalworkers across Central and Eastern India, celebrated for its rustic finish, fine brass threading and raw folk geometry. Complementing this metal craft is Kutchi embroidery, a celebrated textile art from the Kutch district of Gujarat, known for its intricate threadwork, vibrant folk iconography and signature abla (mirror-work) embedded into fabric to reflect light and bring good fortune. By combining the sculptural weight of cast brass with the soft, detailed surface of hand-stitched cotton, the artwork creates a compelling bridge between indigenous metalwork and rural textile traditions.
At the heart of the composition stands the slender deer, posed in profile facing toward the left with an alert and poised posture. The head and neck are sculpted smoothly, featuring a delicate muzzle, large ears and a pair of long, gracefully curved horns that sweep backward in segmented ridges. The deer’s torso is masterfully constructed from rows of hollow cylindrical brass beads and coiled wire rings, giving the body a rhythmic, chain-like texture that catches the light. Four long legs support the creature in a light stance, terminating in tiny hooves that accentuate its delicate form.
The metal figure is mounted upon a soft light cotton fabric base covered in delicate, hand-stitched Kutchi motifs that fill the negative space around the deer. Rendered in muted threads of terracotta red, slate blue, sage green and earthy brown, these folk drawings include four-petaled floral rosettes, geometric cross motifs, stylized animals and birds. Dashed running stitches trace undulating pathways across the fabric, adding a sense of movement and narrative detail to the background.
Enclosing the central scene is an intricate, multi-tiered embroidered border that frames the narrative textile. Inner bands of red and blue running and zigzag stitches form a clean boundary, surrounding a wider outer band studded with small, circular abla mirrors secured by rings of green thread. Set within a warm wooden frame with a subtle golden inner lip, the artwork celebrates both sculptural elegance and delicate folk embroidery.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
