This magnificent mixed-media artwork brings together two iconic Indian heritage traditions, Dhokra lost-wax metal casting and Kutchi hand embroidery, to depict a majestic elephant against a richly detailed textile backdrop. Combining the antique metallic weight of brass with the intricate charm of traditional needlework, the piece captures folk storytelling and craftsmanship in a single harmonized display.
Dhokra is an ancient lost-wax metal casting technique practiced for thousands of years by tribal metalworkers across Central and Eastern India, celebrated for its rustic finish, fine brass threading and raw folk geometry. Complementing this metal craft is Kutchi embroidery, a celebrated textile art from the Kutch district of Gujarat, known for its intricate threadwork, vibrant folk iconography and signature abhla (mirror-work) embedded into fabric to reflect light and bring good fortune. By combining the sculptural weight of cast brass with the soft, detailed surface of hand-stitched cotton, the artwork creates a compelling bridge between indigenous metalwork and rural textile traditions.
At the center of the composition stands the grand elephant, posed in profile facing toward the left with an authoritative stance. Its sculpted head features a smooth metallic finish with a defined eye, a wide fan-like ear, a prominent tusk and a sweeping trunk that extends downward before curling outward at the tip. The elephant’s torso is constructed from overlapping rows of hollow cylindrical brass beads and wire coils, creating a dense, armored texture that evokes traditional ceremonial caparisons. Four segmented legs are depicted with embellished feet, while a slender brass tail curves downward along the rear.
The metal figure is mounted upon a soft, light cotton fabric base, which serves as a canvas for delicate, hand-stitched Kutchi motifs scattered around the elephant. Rendered in fine threads of terracotta red, slate blue and sage green, these folk drawings depict stylized animals, fish, aquatic forms, starburst rosettes and avian figures. Fine, dashed running stitches trace undulating paths across the background, connecting the individual motifs, filling the negative space with hand-crafted narrative detail.
Enclosing the entire scene is a multi-tiered embroidered border that structures the narrative panel. Concentric bands of red and blue running and zigzag stitches form the inner and outer boundaries, framing a middle row of small, circular abla mirrors bound by rings of green thread. Encased within a clean, light-wood frame, the artwork stands as a rich, texture-filled homage to Indian craft heritage and majestic wildlife symbolism.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
