About the Artwork +

The painting by Dr. J Dundaraja, a renowned artist known for his mastery in the Mysore and Tanjore styles, vividly captures a mythological scene from Hindu lore. The central figure is Lord Krishna, depicted in a dynamic pose as he dances gracefully on the hood of a large serpent, holding its tail with one hand. This scene is set against a violent river backdrop, with a clear blue sky above. In the sky, celestial beings or Devas are depicted throwing flowers, celebrating Krishna’s victory. The serpent’s wives (Nagas) are shown worshipping Krishna along with other devotee and sea creatures.

This painting captures a significant episode from Krishna’s childhood, known as the Kaliya Mardan, where Krishna subdues the poisonous serpent Kaliya, who had been terrorizing the inhabitants of Vrindavan by poisoning the Yamuna River. The scene symbolizes the triumph of good (Krishna) over evil (Kaliya). The artist’s skillful use of composition, color, and symbolism not only creates a visually striking piece but also conveys deep spiritual and moral messages, making the painting both an artistic masterpiece and a devotional icon.

Mysore Painting

Mysore painting is an important form of classical South Indian painting style that originated in and around the town of Mysore in Karnataka encouraged and nurtured by the Mysore rulers. The themes for most of these paintings are Hindu gods and goddesses and scenes from Hindu Mythology.
