This unique mixed-media artwork seamlessly unites two iconic Indian craft traditions, Dhokra metal casting and Kutchi embroidery, to depict a regal lion mounted against a richly decorated textile backdrop. Blending the tactile, antique metallic quality of brass with the delicate charm of traditional hand embroidery, the piece captures royal majesty, folk craftsmanship and textured artistry in a single harmonized display.
Dhokra is an ancient lost-wax metal casting technique practiced for thousands of years by tribal metalworkers across Central and Eastern India, celebrated for its rustic finish, fine brass threading and raw folk geometry. Complementing this metal craft is Kutchi embroidery, a celebrated textile art from the Kutch district of Gujarat, known for its intricate threadwork, vibrant folk iconography and signature abla (mirror-work) embedded into fabric to reflect light and bring good fortune. By combining the sculptural weight of cast brass with the soft, detailed surface of hand-stitched cotton, the artwork creates a compelling bridge between indigenous metalwork and rural textile traditions.
At the center of the composition stands the majestic lion, posed in profile with its sculpted face turned slightly outward toward the viewer. The lion’s body and radiating mane are meticulously constructed from dozens of small, hollow cylindrical brass beads and wire coils, arranged in overlapping rows that evoke the rhythmic texture of dense fur and protective armor. Its sculpted head displays bold facial features, expressive eyes, a defined nose bridge and small rounded ears, while its four sturdy legs end in articulated claws, with slender brass tail gracefully arching upward over the hindquarters.
The lion is mounted onto a soft, light cotton fabric base, which serves as a canvas for delicate, hand-stitched Kutchi motifs scattered around the central brass figure. Rendered in fine red, blue and green thread, these line drawings depict stylized birds, animals, fish, floral rosettes and starbursts. These folk symbols float organically through the background, enhancing the textile and ensuring that every section of the canvas vibrates with hand-crafted detail.
Enclosing the scene is a multi-tiered embroidered border that structures the entire composition. A series of running linear and zigzag stitches in blue and red form the inner boundary, surrounded by a wide outer border set with small, circular abla mirrors stitched into place with green thread rings. These reflective mirrors catch ambient light, adding a shimmering contrast to the muted pastel cloth and the warm, antique brass luster of the lion.
Each of our artworks are hand painted by master artists across India. We provide a digital authentication certificate with this artwork signed by the artist which will be sent over email after 3-4 days of delivery of the artwork.
